“Creative Exploration in Wood Turning” July 15-18, 2019 Workshop

Instructor Aaron Hammer with his “Creative Exploration in Wood Turning” July 2019 Workshop students and their creations.

Introduction to Creative Exploration in Wood Turning

In this workshop students learn the basic skills of turning wood on a lathe. The focus is for students to build confidence and explore their potential with the medium through spindle and faceplate turning. Participants will become familiar with the lathe, basic cuts, wood selection, bowl blank preparation and mounting techniques. The sharpening of tools and safety issues are also discussed. Students are encouraged to practice and refine their techniques while completing multiple projects, which may include carving mallets, bottle stoppers and bowls. This community workshop is open to all skill levels.

Award-winning wood turner and HFIA Director Aaron Hammer is teaching the wood turning workshops.  Aaron has been operating his own professional wood turning studio in Hawai’i since 2000. He produces his Hammer Craft line of lathe-turned artistic and functional bowls, drums, wine corks, wooden jewelry and gift items. Helping to preserve and protect Hawaii’s precious forest resources, all Hammer Craft items are made from previously felled Hawaiian trees. Aaron has a passion for working on the lathe because “you work from the center both physically and spiritually…starting with the raw log and transforming it into a finely finished and cherished object is the joy of my creation”.

Aaron designed this intensive four-day workshop for students seeking to develop a significant and comprehensive understanding of the lathe and how to turn wood.  The class was a hands-on experience with each student working on their own lathe.  Workshop topics included the lathe, safety equipment, tool selection and sharpening, wood selection and preparation, and chucks and mounting procedures.  Students took home several completed projects including lamps, bottle stoppers, vases, candle holders and bowls.
